TransLink Reverses TaxiSavers Decision

July 7, 2012
TransLink reverses TaxiSavers decision ERICA BULMAN TransLink announced Wednesday it was reinstating the TaxiSaver program, reversing its original decision to axe the service after a massive outcry. "I regret any angst we have caused for people who were fearful that their program would not continue, that they would not have the access they did," TransLink Board chairwoman Nancy Olewiler said. "That was certainly never the intent." Olewiler admitted TransLink should have engaged with more customers to begin with. TransLink had announced mid-May it was ending TaxiSavers to save $1.1 mil-lion, to be used to improve HandyDART service. But the move caused an up-roar. Outraged seniors and people with disabilities fumed that HandyDART service requires users to book so far ahead that it doesn't allow for unforeseen trips to the doctor, job contingencies or any spontaneity. "We will work with TransLink to make sure that our communities are heard, are engaged and have their say in decisions as they are made, vowed Heather McCain, chairwoman of the Access Transit Users' Advisory Com-mittee. The TaxiSaver program allows HandyCard holders to call a taxi directly and get service at a 50% discount, with TransLink paying the rest. Seniors and people with disabilities express their anger at TransLink's annual general meeting in Vancouver May 30.
