C.A.N Info Brochure

July 24, 2025

We at C.A.N. focus on the “abilities” of those with disabilities and work together to create all- inclusive, barrier-free communities.

Together we ‘C.A.N.’! Citizens for Accessible Neighbourhoods (C.A.N.) is a non-profit society that encourages and helps people with disabilities to use their knowledge, experience, and voice to help others in similar situations.

Universal Access: Citizens for Accessible Neighborhoods is working to educate about, promote, and incorporate, Universal Access and Barrier Free Design in our communities.

Universal Accessibility and Barrier Free Design considers all patrons and community members. Barrier Free Design includes the needs of people with mobility devices such as wheelchairs (power and manual), scooters, walkers, and canes, as well as those with visual or hearing impairments. It also encompasses those who use strollers, and carts, and anyone who experiences something which acts as a barrier in our communities.

Access to Information:
www.canbc.org is an umbrella web site that covers the various programs, services, organizations, support groups, activities, and events in our communities.

We at C.A.N. are aware that getting information can be extremely frustrating and time
consuming and we are working to create a network of easily accessible information.

Adaptive Sports:
C.A.N. is a partner member of BC Disability Sports and is working in cooperation with BC
Disability Sports to promote and create awareness about adaptive sports. Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows will be holding the 2009 BC Disability Games.
