LET’S supported Byrne Creek Secondary School’s Diversity Dance by offering a dedicated low sensory space in the school library. Throughout the event, the low sensory space often had more students in it than the dance floor; at 1 point, there were well over 5x as many students in the library as in the main dance area.

The room was filled with joy, pride, and connection, as students used the space to socialize, rest, move at their own pace, and participate in ways that felt safer and more comfortable.

It was powerful to see how many students chose the low sensory space as their primary way of being at the dance. Being able to provide a space where students feel seen, represented, cared for, and proud shows how access-centered design can transform school events for disabled, neurodivergent, and sensory-sensitive folks – and for anyone who simply needs a different kind of space.
